You may be visiting the pretty town of Beaumaris and its world-renowned Edwardian castle, why not come on a guided bike tour with us to learn more about the area before, and after the castle was built!

On this ride, we skirt around the back of Beaumaris for an unusual view of Edward I’s final, unfinished fortress castle, before revealing some of the secrets of this fascinating South East corner of Anglesey. We cycle to Anglesey’s easternmost tip at Penmon Point. Here you can enjoy views across the narrow sound towards Ynys Seiriol or Puffin Island, and the Great Orme beyond.

The famed Beaumaris castle and the other castle

Having left Beaumaris, we cycle through what was once Anglesey’s main commercial hub in medieval times. We share the tale of another priory now totally lost to history before visiting the ruins of Penmon Priory. Inside Penmon church, which survived the priory as a local parish church, you’ll see some astounding ancient sculptures and Celtic crosses. The church itself is the best example of Norman architecture in north west Wales.

After a lovely section, cycling along the shoreline, the break to explore Penmon priory is welcome! We then join the private road towards Penmon Point or Trwyn Du and its enigmatic lighthouse. As well as exploring the headland and it’s enigmatic black and white lighthouse, we also visit the Pilot House Café for light refreshments!

On our return, we change the activity for a while, and walk through a community woodland to visit a mock castle at the site of the Normans’ first castle on Anglesey. Here we’ll relate a few tales about how the Welsh and the Vikings responded to the first motte and bailey castle, and tell you a scandalous story related to the fortress!

This is a fairly short ride at 11.5 miles- with a few small hills. That’s because our time is spent exploring the many fascinating places of interest along the route!
