Self-Guided Tours

group cycling

Do you want to spend a day cycycling around Anglesey but are unsure where to go or what to see?

We have developed six different Anglesey-based self-guided bike tours of varying lengths and difficulty (well, leisurely to very easy!) so that you can spend a pleasant day cycling on Anglesey.

All the routes take you to interesting places and tell you something about the places you are visiting, so that you family and friends can enjoy a mini-adventure by bike!

To guide you along your route, each guide comes complete with a .gpx file which you can download to an app such as Garmin or Strava or one of many similar free GPX file readers available from your app store.

You also receive a detailed guide to the route, with photographs of each junction as well as notes and stories about places to visit along the route.

(We are still searching for the right software to combine route and guide notes to our level of detail…)

A short ride and a grand day’s exploring

Skirting around the back of Beaumaris, this 11 mile cycle ride has a few hills. It’s not a long route, but that’s because it stops at several places on interest along the way, so could easily take up your whole day.

You will visit Penmon Priory and dovecote, Penmon Point with its iconic lighthouse and discover a castle ‘folly’ on your return. (Written for families with children, but suitable for adults as well!)

A ride out to the sea and an island church

This is a longer circular cycle route, at 20 miles and an elevation gain of just over 600 foot.

The self-guided cycle visits St Cwyfan’s Church (if you want to visit the church which sits on an island in the bay, (you may want to consult a Tide Table to arrive when the tide is out), before turning inland for a quiet country cycle. Part of the route is on the Lôn Las Cefni cycle track.

A long ride through Anglesey’s History

At 20 miles with an elevation gain of 800 foot, this self-guided cycle route gives you a good long ride through lovely rural lanes, and with a few hills and amazing views. Slightly hillier.

Visiting rural churches, prehistoric sites, and other points of interest, this route really gives you a sense of rural Anglesey, and of being far away from anywhere as you cycle along lanes with grass growing down the middle!

Ride and walk through prehistoric Anglesey

This 14 mile bike ride provides a good combination of cycling and walking (at least 1 mile) to visit five prehistoric sites along Anglesey’s Braint valley, including the iconic Bryn Celli Ddu burial chamber.

You will ride along the Menai Strait, along quiet roads with great views of the mountains, and (should you choose), along a short off-road section.

Ride through Prehistoric Ynys Cybi

The most challenging of our quite easy cycle routes, this 13.5-mile journey rises over 1,150 feet to take you through Ynys Cybi (Holyhead Island)’s prehistory as well as her hills.

The first half of the bike ride is a fairly challenging ride up from sea level to South Stack, after this the ride is easy, though there is more traffic on this route than on our other routes.

You should also consider that this ride is fairly exposed to the wind, and consider the weather forecast before embarking on the ride.

Ynys Llanddwyn Lover’s Isle – a long easy (mainly) off road cycle

A totally different approach to Ynys Llanddwyn, this bike ride starts in Llangefni and uses cycle and forest tracks, apart from one short, quiet on-road section. The 20-mile easy and mainly flat cycling route (with around 200 foot height gain overall,) includes an opportunity to spend time exlporing the beach and island (tide permitting, again it’s worth checking a Tide Table on advance!)

We sold one ride to a family who contacted us asking where they could cycle.

This is what they said:

The ride was perfect for our two families with kids (8-15 years). It was just the right length and challenge.

There was also plenty to see with a good number of stopping places. We thought about using our ordnance survey maps to work out a route but when you don’t know the landscape there’s the risk of picking boring routes with high hedgerows and nothing to do along the way.

It was great to pull on someone else’s knowledge.

Great price for a great day out!

Another recent customer e mailed to say:

we did the bike tour and it was excellent – thanks so much for a great tour…. We had a great day out and my husband said that it was the best ever bike ride he has ever been on. I think we were in awe of the route – coming up that little track at the end and how it popped out to the car park just left us gobsmacked!”

UPDATE!

Our Blog about cycling around Anglesey’s coastline has proved so popular that we’ve decided to sell the .gpx file (no guide) to this 110 mile route. If longer cycles are your thing, then jump here.
